The Far Meadow was founded by me, Julia Frodahl --Â a Bowie-eyed lover of nature, philosophy, music, silence, animals, art, and the mysteries of the cosmos.
Life didn't begin gently. I spent my earliest years enduring aggressive cancer treatment while growing up in a home that was unsafe.Â
As a young adult, when I finally had the freedom to build a life of my own design, I studied philosophy, spent time in Buddhist circles, taught myself to write music, and lived an artist’s life.
Like most lives, mine took many unexpected twists and turns.
Then there came a time when life brought me to a fire I couldn't walk around.
And just as everything was coming together, it all turned to ash.Â
(The details matter less than what came next.)
But as is often the case, this ending was also a beginning.
I sat with my emptiness in the desert. I studied psychology. I immersed myself in the language of dreams.Â
And while this process started with the rather desperate hope of getting back to the life I had before, in time I realized that not only was there no going back, but something even more beautiful was beginning to bloom, and that was the ability to actually inhabit my own life.
Looking back, I can see that while I had built a beautiful life, I wasn't able to inhabit it.
And perhaps this is one of the greatest struggles for the modern human: learning not only how to build a life, but how to truly live inside of it.
Like a sparrow, I was always taking flight, never landing long enough to connect or to rest.
But through that long season, I learned to fly without fleeing. I could disappear into silence without hiding there.Â
I learned how to land.
And in landing, I discovered a deep open-heartedness and an ability to be fully where I was, exactly as I was.
Now I guide people through the long, beautiful work of healing, maturing, and becoming fully themselves.
I spend my days helping people come home to themselves, deepen their relationships, meet life with courage, and design a life that feels meaningful and heart-centered.
At the heart of my work is the conviction that every human being contains a wellspring of wisdom and love. The task is to remove the obstacles in the way.Â
But my deepest hope is not only to help people heal. Â
To me, healing is only the beginning.
My deepest hope is to help more of us become the kind of person whose very way of being makes the world a better place. To rewild our culture with a new generation of elders whose lives are organized around service to the whole.
That is what this school is ultimately about.Â
I hope you'll join us.
